Paracord 550 is a lightweight parachute cord with a break strength of 550 pounds. Paracord 550 is made of 100% nylon and is composed of two parts: the external sheath and the internal strands. The outer sheath construction is tightly interwoven which gives it a smooth texture that is comfortable against the skin. There are seven internal strands that are each rated for a break strength of 50 pounds. Paracord 550 external sheath and seven internal, interwoven stands give the parachute cord the total break strength of 550 pounds.
Paracord 550 was originally used by US paratroopers during Word War II for parachute suspension lines. However, soldiers quickly discovered multiple uses for parachute cord that made it extremely useful in the field. Not only is it a strong rope for securing equipment, but the sheath can be opened and the internal strands can be separated for other uses such as fishing line. This unique attribute has been influential in the widespread popularity and manufacturing of paracord 550 as a general purpose utility cord for both military and civilian purposes.
